Sub Primary Year 4 Tanya & Jennie

by Tanya Rodin,

DATE 28th August

90-minute session in the classroom:

Warm Up (one photo)

We played a quick game of STOP GO, with some different prompts of shake and strike (a pose) and up and down. It was a quick one today so we could get stuck into our sewing. The parent helpers were getting the low down of the design whilst we were outside.

Main Activity (one photo)

Sewing our Door Stops.

Today we had some amazing helpers; Gemma, parents, the Deputy and Jennie’s mum.

Each helper had a station, with a sewing machine and two students working away at sewing their doorstops.

Whilst the others waited they were decorating their rock hearts to put inside filled with the messages they wanted their creature to take to their new home. They were also designing labels that they will be attaching to the creatures they made.

All up so far after today we have created 56! And each selling for $20, raising money for the schools charity of the Telethon institute. And excitingly empowering the students to creatively think about ways of creating using textiles and the clothes we wear. Many mentioned they were going to ask their parents for a sewing machine.

Reflection with the students (one photo)

During the week Jennie had the class filling in a bit more of their reflection journals, which is great because that way kind of during the week they have been thinking on their CS activities and learnings.

After the session:

Planning with the Teacher
(refer back to your original Term Plan document, discuss successes, explore challenges and make changes.)

Success! They all look amazing, and it was so incredibly palpable the excitement to be using a sewing machine, for many it was their first time. Seeing them grow in confidence as they made their second and just how proud they were of their efforts, it was really beautiful.

It was a gift to have some real one on one time with a lot of them.

The parents that came to help each spoke of how much their children have been raving about their CS experience, so that was so great to hear.

Working with students
(what is emerging, what is engaging them/not, what’s making them curious.)

Learning new ways of making.

Ideas moving forward
(ideas for next session, future lessons, discussed with teacher, do you need the teacher to do anything before you return.)

Next week we are going to continue to make a few more doorstops, as well as some appreciation thankyou’s for our helpers, signs for our stall, and just general prep for market day. Maybe also our reflection bunting?

Resources
(do you need anything, who will source it?)

Most things have already been sourced. Jennie continues to be given jeans, it was an amazing surprise the opshop just donated a whole bunch of jeans they wouldn’t have been able to sell. Also other teachers and parents have also continued to donate stuffing, and jeans.

How can you share learning outcomes/stories of transformation with the wider school community (e.g. Connect newsletter, staff meeting, school newsletter, school social media platforms)

It was great to see the family members come in and help. Heather the principal also came in briefly and everyone is getting excited for market day on the 13th of September.
